How did people travel 100 years ago and 50 years ago?

100 years ago there was no MTR, aeroplanes or cars. Most people walked or took boats (Sampans).

If you were rich you used a sedan chair or rickshaw. People would carry you or pull you around.

The Hong Kong tram started working in 1904 this was one of the fastest ways to get around. There was trams on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. The Kowloon tram has been demolished since.

You could also take the Star Ferry from Central to Tsim Sha Tsui.

50 years ago, people started to use more buses, cars and taxis.

You had to be very rich to go on a aeroplane or own a car. Poor people walked, rode a bicycle or took the tram.

Ferries were very slow.

There was no MTR.

Hong Kong airport was in Kai Tak 50 years ago. It moved to Lantau Island in 1998. People said it was very scary landing at Kai Tak airport as it was very close to buildings.

Nowadays, people can use many different types of transport. People can take buses, the MTR and taxis.

Ferries are much faster and you can take aeroplanes to anywhere in the world.
